Onsen Tips: When visiting an onsen, it's important to follow cultural practices. If you have tattoos, it is important to check if the onsen allows tattoos. In modern times, many do, but it is polite to ask before entering. When you enter, place your items in lockers and disrobe. Older onsen often operate unmanned with paid lockers to compensate the owners for usage and maintenance. Once disrobed, you will want to rinse off or clean yourself before getting into the onsen. This often means pouring yourself with buckets of water from the bath or using a nearby cleaning station. Locals will often just rinse off before entering, but it may be more polite to formally clean yourself before entering. Not all onsen allow the use of soap products at cleaning stations, so be cautious before using. Never use soap products in the onsen themselves. Once cleaned or rinsed, enter the onsen. Onsen are very hot (over 40ºC), so only expect to remain in the water for 5 - 10 minutes before getting out. Never let your hair touch the water. If you have long hair, tie it before getting in. Enjoy the hot water before getting out for a break or to get cleaned and dry. In Beppu, it is customary not to sit at the edge of the onsen, as many locals use the edge to rest their heads when inside of the bath. After a hot water bath, it is an incredible experience to rinse with freezing cold water for 5 minutes before getting in again. Repeat this process as many times as you like before drying and leaving the onsen. Some onsen have a capacity limit. Consider this when determining the length of your stay.
