ABOUT THE ADVENTURE
Worth the $37
I want to start off this post by saying that yes, Angkor Wat is expensive as all hell. The $37 admission fee will pay for 10 meals at a local restaurant, 12 drinks at a bar, or six nights at a hostel. I went into Angkor Wat begrudgingly paying the $37 and came out acknowledging that the admission was totally worth it. Here's why: The Angkor Wat Heritage Site is a massive complex with a long history. Not does the UNESCO World Heritage Site feature Angkor Wat, but it also includes a dozen or more other temples spread across the complex. People come from all over the world to explore the temples and have a chance to visit one of the contestants for the next world wonder.
A Reflection of Changing Cultures
Angkor Wat, located in present-day Cambodia, is one of the most iconic and significant archaeological sites in Southeast Asia. Built in the early 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god Vishnu. Its construction was part of a grand vision to create a capital city and state temple that would symbolize the power and wealth of the Khmer Empire. Over time, Angkor Wat transitioned from a Hindu temple to a Buddhist one, reflecting changes in religious beliefs within the region. Despite political and social upheavals, including the fall of the Khmer Empire, Angkor Wat endured as a spiritual and cultural center. Its architectural grandeur, intricate bas-reliefs, and vast moat continue to awe visitors and scholars alike, earning it recognition as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and a symbol of Cambodia's rich history and cultural heritage.
Monkeys and Wildlife
The Angkor Wat Complex is home to a population of Long-Tailed Macaques, which are native to the region. These monkeys can be seen foraging for food, grooming each other, and interacting with visitors. Additionally, the area is home to diverse bird species, including Asian openbills, egrets, and kingfishers, which inhabit the lush vegetation and water features surrounding the temples. Visitors may also catch glimpses of other wildlife such as squirrels, lizards, and butterflies, adding to the natural charm and biodiversity of the Angkor Wat complex.
Angkor Wat Complex Tips
There are many temples at the Angkor Wat Complex. My favorite was the Prasat Ta Keo Temple located near the mouth of the Bayon Temple. In my opinion, exploring the temples is better on foot rather than taking a tuk tuk guide. Not only do you get to save money, but you also get to explore freely this way. Another tip is to get there early and stay late. Many people go on a sunrise tour and return around 1PM, while others leave for a sunset tour at around 3PM. The time between 11AM and 4PM is a peak time to explore the temples other than Angkor Wat without as many other tourists.
