ABOUT THE ADVENTURE

$2.50 Kayak Rentals

While staying at Karma Traders Kampot in Kampot, Cambodia, I had heard about Merkari Kampot, a hotel which offers $2.50 USD / 10,000 KHR kayak rentals per day. Seeing how I had had a call to the water ever since the 4,000 Islands in Laos, I was excited to check this out. Merkari Kampot does in fact have a $2.50 USD kayak rental service and it's pretty simple to acquire a kayak. Simply just show up at Merkari and ask somebody at the front desk (located inside the property) about the kayaks. They'll bring you over to the water, get you set up with a kayak, and you are free to take it wherever you'd like for the whole day.

The Green Cathedral Loop

The day before I kayaked the Green Cathedral, I had simply stayed on the Preak Teuk Chu River heading north. However, I had been hearing about the Green Cathedral Loop and wanted to give it a try! The Green Cathedral is named that because the palm fronds bend over the narrow river like the arches of a cathedral. It is truly nature's wonder and, whether or not you're religious, this is a place to find peace under the world's canopy. The loop takes you through some of the resorts in north Kampot, but is not very intrusive and during early December there were not many people around. The loop starts and ends at a collection of restaurants, which you can pull up to on your kayak and stop at for some brunch. At certain points you may feel a bit lost, so it's important to check Google Maps every once in a while.
